palm royale’s biggest stars share their secrets
We can also title this “That time Shannon went to the ladies room and got awkwardly stuck on the side of the stage for thirty minutes” while the cast happily chatted at Apple TV’s Emmy Event in LA. After they screened the first episode from the show we had a very long wait before the cast came out to chat. So long I figured I would run to the restroom and get back to my seat before the stars came out. Well, that didn’t happen. While I was in there, they took the stage and the only way to get back to my seat would have been to cross in front of the stage where all eyes and cameras would have landed on me. So I stayed put, awkwardly hanging out stage right with all the makeup artists, PR Folks and agents who were all in black, accept of course me- the fool that dressed in theme for the event.
The cast could not have been more lovely and this would have been my view if I had not gotten stuck by the side of the stage looking like a Palm Royale stalker. Carol Burnett looked fabulous in person and was so damn funny. She gushed about how talented Kristen Wiig was as Maxine to the point Kristin got emotional and reached out to hold Carol’s hand. I know because I was way too close for comfort. But it was a very sweet moment I am grateful I got to witness. Another Icon, Bruce Dern gushed about working with his daughter, Laura who was not at the event but his kindness and sharp wit was wonderful to see in person. Josh Lucas also sung Wiig’s praises telling the audience that what he loved about his character was the way he loved Maxine with so much intensity. Kaia Gerber had no issue clearing her throat during his speech making the whole audience laugh. If you’ve seen the show you know why. Speaking of Kaia, she is the spitting image of her mother Cindy Crawford. I know because I was standing way too close, way to close!
The show is a romp, creator Abe Sylvia who calls it a “melodramedy”, talked about wanting the series to be maximalist with all the starfish hats, bells, whistles, wigs, sunglasses, revolvers and washed up whales the world could handle. And they hit the mark.
Kristen was a class act. She stayed and took photos with fans for over 2 hours. That rarely happens in Hollywood.
It was a fun afternoon even if I may have come across as more of a stalker then journalist…upside I did get to try my first grasshopper?
My review of the show, a total hit. The minty sweet 1960’s cocktail, not so much. But thank you Apple TV + for a classy party, the star studded cast and great snacks.
